How electricity units are calculated

A unit of electricity is one kilowatt-hour (kWh) — the energy a 1,000-watt appliance uses in one hour. When you buy a prepaid token, 7.5% VAT is taken out first, and the rest is divided by your band's tariff:

Units = (Amount ÷ 1.075) ÷ Tariff per kWh

For example, ₦20,000 on Band A at ₦209.50/kWh gives (20,000 ÷ 1.075) ÷ 209.5 ≈ 88.8 units.

Tariffs differ slightly between distribution companies (AEDC, IKEDC, EKEDC, PHED, KEDCO, JED and others) and NERC reviews them regularly. The preset rates are approximate — pick "Enter my own rate" and use the rate on your latest token receipt for an exact answer.

Frequently asked questions

How many units is ₦10,000 on Band A?

At about ₦209.50 per kWh including 7.5% VAT, ₦10,000 buys roughly 44 units (kWh). Check your DisCo receipt for your exact tariff.

Is VAT charged on prepaid electricity?

Yes. 7.5% VAT is included in the amount you pay, so it is removed before your units are calculated.

What is the difference between Band A and Band E?

Bands are based on promised hours of supply. Band A customers are promised at least 20 hours a day and pay the highest tariff; Band E customers get the fewest hours and pay the lowest tariff.
